What are Birthstones?

Zodiac birthstones have been around for centuries and have always had a special meaning behind them. These gems and minerals vary in color and symbolism depending on which month they are associated with, so it can be a fun way to personalize your jewelry if you know what birthstone is special to you. But what exactly are birthstones, and why do they mean so much?

At its core, a birthstone is a gemstone or mineral assigned to each month of the year based on historical significance. This practice dates all the way back to biblical times when Aaron was known to wear 12 gemstones in his breastplate as a symbol of power. The belief is that each piece of birthstone jewelry carries good luck and protection from negative energies associated with the person’s birth month.

Even for people who aren’t particularly superstitious, many still find beauty and personalization in wearing their personal birthstone as jewelry or as part of an outfit.

In addition to the spiritual aspect of birthstones, many cultures also assign different meanings to each stone based on its zodiac birthstone color. Blue sapphires are often associated with loyalty, while green emeralds symbolize growth and new beginnings; each color has its own unique representation that adds an even deeper layer of symbolism for those who wear them.

Birthstones also come in various sizes and shapes—from precious stones like diamonds to semi-precious stones like turquoise—and some even come in multiple colors within one stone! Whether you’re looking for a unique gift or something meaningful to wear every day, understanding the significance behind your own personal birthstone can really elevate the experience.

How to Wear Birthstones and Activate Them?

Wearing birthstones is a fun and meaningful way to express yourself and keep your energies aligned with the universe. With this thought in mind, you can wear birthstones as jewelry or include them in your wardrobe. For example, if you have an Aquarius birthstone such as a Garnet, you could add it to your outfit by wearing a necklace adorned with Garnets or even a ring that features the gorgeous stone.

Just like fashion items can make you feel more confident and stylish, wearing birthstones can also bring about a powerful energy that will help you stay balanced and centered throughout the day.

Furthermore, activating and recharging your birthstone to maximize its energy properties is essential. One great way to do this is by meditating with it; simply sit comfortably, close your eyes and hold the gemstone in your hands. Visualize yourself drawing healing energy from the stone while calming any anxious thoughts or emotions.

You can also take advantage of elements such as moonlight or sunlight by placing the gem under these sources for an hour or two before wearing it; this will allow cosmic forces to cleanse and strengthen its healing vibes.

Finally, if possible, keep it away from digital devices (such as phones) since radiation can weaken its energetic qualities over time.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

Aries has double the luck and dazzles. Their traditional birthstone is bloodstone, a deep green speckled with spots of red like drops of courage that have been protecting Aries natives since ancient times!

But modern-day horoscope seekers now also enjoy diamonds as their second Aries birthstone; after all, who wouldn’t want to rock some wealth and power around? With their ice-like sparkle and the range of colors they possess, diamonds are a great addition to any Aries wardrobe. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also give Aries people strength and courage in hard times.

So regardless if you pick a traditional birthstone or a more contemporary one, you can’t go wrong either way!

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

Taurus birthstones certainly have a colorful history! The traditional Taurus birthstone from the zodiac is sapphire, which gained its official status since it was known for providing Tauruses with protection, strength, and wisdom.

Then came the modern Taurus birthstone, the emerald, and really, what Taurus doesn’t enjoy wearing jewelry that exemplifies their spirit color? This beautiful stone has green hues with hints of blue and yellow that bring out the sense of enlightenment Tauruses strive for.

Now Tauruses can choose between both gems to protect themselves from harm and create an even bigger impression when they wear them in their favorite accessories!

Gemini (May 21–June 21)

Gemini’s birthstones are never in short supply, with both an agate and a pearl on the list. The traditional birthstone of Gemini is the agate, which has been recognized in Gemini lore as early as the 16th century.

Though its history dates back even further, agate was once believed to ward off malicious energy and give Gemini an edge when communicating and unraveling truths. As for Gemini’s modern birthstone, the pearl is just as magnificent, ranging in beautiful shades such as white, grey, and pink.

Although many don’t know the incredible importance of possessing pearls, they are truly unique gems that befit Gemini deeply, from providing inspiration to bring Gemini’s plans into reality to boosting courage, not to mention their penchant for capturing beauty in life.

Cancer (June 22–July 22)

Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, and believe it or not, it has an official Cancer birthstone. Its traditional birthstone is the beautiful emerald, and the modern alternative is the ruby. Cancerians looking to make the most of their birthstones should know that they are renowned all around the world. Emeralds are said to signify rebirth, while rubies are symbols of power and zeal.

As Cancerians value loyalty and trustworthiness above all else, these two stones could also benefit them: emerald for fortifying friendships and ruby for gaining strength to store memories.

Both stones have vibrant colors, and Cancerians also tend to have an affinity for them. Cancer people love having color around them from time to time in order to keep their spirits lifted.

Thinking about all these advantages, Cancerians should totally grab those shining gems!

Leo (July 23–August 22)

Leo natives are blessed with two official birthstones: onyx and peridot. Onyx has been Leo’s traditional zodiac birthstone for centuries, recognized for its bold, black color, indicating Leo’s confidence and courage.

More recently, a modern Leo birthstone was introduced—the bright and beautiful peridot. Peridot, in particular, is believed to bring Leo success and luck, whether recognition from peers or a positive outcome from world-changing endeavors.

Whatever way you look at it, Leo is lucky to have the exotic colors of onyx and peridot, which Leo natives can wear near their hearts (or fingertips) as symbols of hard work, ambition, and resilience.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

Virgo is known for its sharp eye for detail and for being highly analytical, so it’s no surprise that Virgo’s birthstones reflect these characteristics. The traditional Virgo birthstone is the vibrant carnelian, a quartz type that comes in shades of orange and red.

As far as modern Virgos go, they get their choice of a bright blue sapphire to mark their zodiac sign. Both stones have quite a history, with carnelian being one of the most popular gems of ancient Greece and Rome, while blue sapphire was often worn to pay homage to the gods in ancient Zoroastrianism.

Not only are Virgo birthstones stunningly beautiful—Carnelian with its warm colors and sapphire with its unique hue—they also have potent energies imbued into them that benefit all Virgos. Both stones stimulate mental clarity and concentration, helping Virgos stay focused on their goals and stay organized in life.

Libra (September 23–October 23)

Libra’s zodiac birthstone has quite the history! The traditional birthstone is chrysoberyl chrysolite, which comes in deep yellow-green to greenish hues and is a beautiful and valuable gemstone in Libra’s book of life.

Librans want balance and fairness in everything, so it’s no wonder they have two options. Their modern alternative zodiac stone is the opal, an enchantingly beautiful gem of many colors: blues, greens, yellows, and reds, just to name a few.

Libra wants to express their vibrancy while keeping things even-keeled, and these stones complement Libra’s optimism by evoking feelings of freedom! Both the traditional and alternate birthstones provide them with clarity of mind and can be used in meditation or healing exercises too.

Give your Libran friend the gift of sparkle and stability with one of these semiprecious gems. They are sure to benefit from the stoic qualities inspired by them.

Scorpio (October 24–November 21)

Scorpio is one of the most mysterious signs in the zodiac, and Scorpio’s birthstone holds its own mystery. Their traditional birthstone is beryl, a beautiful yet strong green-colored gem that resembles a liquid emerald.

Topaz is the modern alternative, bringing Scorpios both energy and power. Both beryl and topaz have deep historical roots in becoming Scorpio’s official stones of their zodiac, which makes them all the more special for this zodiac sign!

These gems carry an intense vibration, aiding Scorpios to focus on their goals and purpose—definitely benefiting their needs! And let’s not forget how lovely they look—sparkle on, Scorpions!

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

Sagittarians have indeed wished on a star because their zodiac birthstones are truly special! According to tradition, topaz is Sagittarius’ birthstone, and things get even better as Sagittarians claim two additional stones for the same sign, including turquoise and lapis lazuli.

Each stone features unique colors: topaz has its brilliant yellow hue, turquoise is reminiscent of a soothing Mediterranean sea, and lapis exhibits ancient shades of blue.

Aside from mere aesthetics, Sagittarians benefit from their “lucky” birthstones; it is thought that wearing their zodiac stone may bring joy, health, wealth, and good luck—because, let’s face it, Sags never have enough fortune!

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Capricorns have it made: not only do they have the traditional birthstone of ruby, but they also have a second gem in their corner: garnet. Capricorn birthstones are said to bring prosperity, joy, and eternal love when set in an engagement ring.

Capricorns receive a double dose of luck when selecting jewelry pieces with either ruby or garnet stones, as these symbols represent their soul nature. Rubies and garnets come in colors ranging from deep reds to soft pinks, representing a Capricorn’s inner fire and spiritual passion.

From rings to necklaces, they can wear both rubies and garnets for continuous protection throughout their life journey. So break out the jewelry box and go Capricorn-style!

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

Aquarius’ zodiac birthstone is an interesting story. Garnet has traditionally been Aquarius’ birthstone for centuries, while the modern switch-up is amethyst.

Both of these stones fit Aquarius’ personality in unique ways. The fiery scarlet hue of a garnet can help Aquarians feel energized and powerful to take on any challenge that comes their way. Amethyst offers a more calming blue-violet hue, helping them relax and work through their emotions calmly and collectedly.

Both are special when worn as Aquarius zodiac jewelry, as they signify understanding of their personality traits as well as help temper their chattiness and impulsiveness. A perfect birthday present for this water-bearer sign!

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

Pisces is commonly associated with its official birthstone, amethyst, and its modern alternative, aquamarine. Both of these magnificent stones have rich histories that would make the Pisceans proud.

The traditional zodiac stone, amethyst, comes in a range of beautiful purples, blending effortlessly together in one uninterrupted hue—kind of like Piscean harmony! It was believed to give the Pisces wearer serenity and stability when faced with adversity.

On the other hand, Aquamarine is the modern Pisces birthstone, featuring a bright blue-green color—a hint of their active imagination combined with the calming energy of wavey ocean sounds.

Pisceans proudly wear them as symbols of subtlety, power, and strength—all characteristic traits in Piscean astrology.
